Do you feel like you’ve tried the treatments available without success? Your symptoms could be due to bite imbalances and at Sturgill Orthodontics, we have the tools and expertise to bring you lasting relief.

What Is TMD/TMJ?

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) connects your jaw to the temporal bones in your skull. This hinge allows you to move your jaw in all directions to chew, speak and yawn.

Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a group of conditions that involve issues with your TMJ and the facial muscles that control its movement. Many people experience these symptoms all around Johnson City, Bristol and Norton, VA.

The symptoms can flare up in any of the interconnected parts including your jaw, ears, nose, face, neck, shoulders and upper back and may include:

  • Jaw, face or neck pain and tenderness
  • Persistent headaches
  • Backaches
  • Clicking, popping or grating sounds in your jaw
  • Decreased jaw mobility and trouble opening your mouth fully
  • Jaws that get locked in an open or closed position

Jaw Pain Treatment in Johnson City, Bristol, & Norton

While TMD can be due to an injury or arthritis, other times it’s actually the result of an imbalance in the forces in the nerves, ligaments, and muscles. It’s important to receive a proper diagnosis before deciding on a course of action, which is why Dr. Sturgill, Dr. Williams, and Dr. Harper will conduct a thorough TMJ examination.

Once we’ve pinpointed the cause, we can develop a personalized treatment plan to help alleviate your discomfort. We take a conservative multidisciplinary approach and aim to use less invasive treatments.

Options for TMJ pain may include oral appliances combined with physical therapy, trigger point injections or injections with botulinum toxin. We’ll walk you through your choices at your consultation.
