Meet Your Johnson City Orthodontist

Dr. Jeremiah Sturgill grew up in the small town of Big Stone Gap in southwestern Virginia. He knew he wanted to be an orthodontist as a teenager. After seeing how much braces changed his smile, he was inspired to help others achieve similar success through orthodontic treatment. He kicked off his academic journey by attending King University in Bristol, Tennessee on an academic scholarship. He graduated with honors and earned dual degrees in biology and business administration.

After college, Dr. Sturgill went to dental school at Arizona School of Dentistry & Oral Health, located just outside of Phoenix. Again, he opted for the dual major route getting his Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) and Master of Public Health (MPH) degrees. Dr. Sturgill completed the Postgraduate Orthodontic and Dentofacial Orthopedics Program and graduated with a specialty certificate in orthodontics and a doctorate in health education (DHEd). He was also chosen to participate in implant osseointegration study at Harvard School of Dental Medicine. He wrapped up his training by serving as chief resident for his program and completing rotations at the St. Joseph’s Hospital and Medical Center – Barrow Neurological Institute Cleft and Craniofacial Center. Phew! That was a lot of schooling!

Professional Background & Recognition

After undergoing the rigorous process of getting board certified, which involved hundreds of additional hours of preparation to show he was able to provide the highest level of patient care, Dr. Sturgill earned the distinction of becoming a Diplomate of the American Board of Orthodontics. This honor is bestowed on only 40% of practicing orthodontists.

While Dr. Sturgill’s wife, Dr. Riley Sturgill, was attending residency at Virginia Commonwealth University, he joined one of the most prestigious practices in Richmond, Virginia. He was also tapped to join the faculty at Virginia Commonwealth University as an Assistant Professor for the Orthodontic and Dentofacial Orthopedic residency program. He continues to teach aspiring orthodontists the intricacies of straightening the teeth and aligning the bite.

Dr. Sturgill’s rigorous training, experience in advanced technology and commitment to continuing education have provided him with a vast skill set in traditional braces, clear braces, adult braces, Invisalign, orthognathic surgery, cleft palate/craniofacial syndromes, laser dentistry, lingual (hidden) braces, sleep apnea and TMD/myofascial pain.

Moreover, his dedication to patients and their dental health helps people smile in more ways than one. He combines his profound orthodontic skill with thorough communication, professionalism and a zany sense of humor to help patients achieve the orthodontic results they desire while having fun.

Beyond the Practice

Outside of the office, Dr. Sturgill, his wife, and their daughter Pelegren enjoy hiking, camping, horseback riding and skiing. They’re also active in their church, Redeemer Community Church, and have taken mission trips across the globe visiting everywhere from the rainforests of Uganda to the waters of the Amazon River all the way to the northern villages of the Arctic Circle.

In spite of their love of travel and adventure, there’s no place the Sturgills would rather practice than northeast Tennessee and southwest Virginia. It not only provides them the chance to be close to their families, it also grants them the ability to serve the communities they cherish.

Dr. Allison Williams grew up in the Midwestern town of Carmel, IN, where at the age of 11 she first told her parents about her desire to become an orthodontist. That dream began to unfold when she attended Indiana University, studying Biology and Small Business Management. She graduated with honors in 2014, and met her husband, Matt, through leading Young Life in the process.

Dr. Williams continued to pursue her dream, beginning her dental education at Indiana University School of Dentistry, located in Indianapolis. In 2018, she completed her training and graduated at the top of her class. Subsequently, Dr. Williams accepted a residency position at the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry Graduate Orthodontic Residency Program – one of the top orthodontic programs in the country. She earned an Orthodontic Certification and Master’s Degree of Dental Science upon successfully defending her thesis on 3-D printing. Through this program, Dr. Williams gained extensive experience with interdisciplinary cases and served on the craniofacial team during her time as a resident.

Beyond Practice

Dr. Williams and her husband, Matt, enjoy spending their time hiking, kayaking, cooking, and running with their dog, Mowgli. They have stayed active in Young Life throughout their marriage and cannot wait to see where they can serve in Johnson City. Matt is happy to continue his career as a Biology teacher at Science Hill High School.

They’re excited about moving to East Tennessee where they’ll be surrounded by the beautiful mountains and southern hospitality. Dr. Williams is truly honored to work with such an outstanding team at Sturgill Orthodontics and she is thrilled to meet all of you!

Dr. David Storie grew up in a military family with his father serving as a military dentist for years. Perhaps this sparked his interest in smiles! Dr. Storie graduated with honors from Fort Campbell High School before earning his bachelor’s degree from Western Kentucky University. He then attended the University of Kentucky Dental School where he obtained a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree. Upon entering active duty, Dr. Storie continued his education at the Army’s one-year General Practice Residency at Fort Riley, Kansas. This additional training allowed him to gain experience in all dental specialties. He further honed his skills while serving two overseas tours in Germany as a general dentist. When Dr. Storie returned to the United States, he got his specialty certificate in orthodontics and a master’s in oral biology at Fort Knox and the University of Louisville.

Awards & Involvement

Dr. Storie has received numerous academic awards including first place in the Southern Association of Orthodontists’ Thesis Award Program and runner-up for the U.S. Army’s Joseph L. Bernier Award for Excellence in Research. Can you tell he has a love of learning? He’s also a member of many leading organizations such as:

  • International College of Dentists (ICD)
  • American Dental Association (ADA)
  • American Association of Orthodontists (AAO)

Bringing Smiles to Patients and the Community

Dr. Storie recently retired from the practice, though his legacy continues in all of the fantastic smiles he’s created in the area. He’s involved in his local community and is dedicated to giving back. He’s served as Elder and Chairman of the Board at the First Christian Church in Johnson City and frequently takes mission trips around the world putting his knowledge and skills to good use. Dr. Storie and his wife Nancy have three children. Their son John is a dentist undertaking an oral surgery fellowship (it really runs in the family!), their daughter Diane is a nurse practitioner in Atlanta, Georgia, and their daughter Allison is a CPA in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Johnson City Braces

When it comes to straightening smiles and correcting misalignment between the teeth and jaws, traditional braces are one of the most efficient and time-proven orthodontic tools we have. They are normally made up of metal or ceramic brackets that are attached to the teeth, then connected by wires and tiny rubber bands or elastics. Through regular adjustment appointments with our doctors, the brackets, wires, and bands will work together to apply gentle, continuous pressure that will gradually move the teeth into the desired positions.

Braces have a long history of successfully correcting a number of orthodontic issues, from simple to complex. Because they can sometimes work faster at closing gaps and aligning teeth than other options, overall treatment time may be slightly reduced. Traditional braces also tend to require less of the complicated technology and expensive equipment that newer treatments rely on, making them a cost-effective option for straightening smiles.

Johnson City Invisalign

Instead of brackets, wires, and bands, the Invisalign system uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gradually move the teeth into alignment. This treatment option is popular with both patients and orthodontists, and is currently the top alternative to traditional braces. The aligners are made of a clear plastic material that has been designed to fit comfortably over a patient’s teeth, and they are switched out approximately every 1-2 weeks for the next in the series. This keeps teeth moving in the direction we want them to go. Patient compliance is crucial to the success of the Invisalign system, and aligners must be worn 20-22 hours per day throughout treatment to be effective. Patients who neglect to wear the aligners as recommended by our doctors can impede the results and also add time to the overall orthodontic process.
